A flavorful and satisfying addition to any bread basket. The onions add sweetness and the bacon adds a distinctive smokey flavor.
Ingredients
3⁄4 cup Idaho-E. Oregon yellow onion, finely chopped
1⁄2 cup bacon, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 package active dry yeast
1⁄4 cup warm water
1 cup warm milk
2 tbsp. sugar
3⁄4 tsp. salt
4-4 1⁄2 cups unsifted flour
Steps
1. In a skillet over medium heat, sauté onion, bacon and garlic in oil until golden.
2. In a bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add milk, sugar, salt and 2 cups flour. Beat until well blended. Stir in onion, bacon and garlic mixture. Add enough extra flour to make a soft dough.
3. On a floured surface, knead dough well and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size. Punch down and shape into a loaf; place in a greased loaf pan and cover. Let dough rise again about 1 hr. or until doubled in size.
4. Bake at 375° F for 45 min. or until done.
