ID News--Lady Baltimore bows out; U.S. Foodservice buys business

Lady Baltimore Foods, Inc., Kansas City, KS, will sell various assets to U.S. Foodservice, Columbia, MD. Sale price was not disclosed. The 450,000-square-foot warehouse of the UniPro-member broadliner is not part of the deal and will be closed.

The family-run distributor ranked as the 25th largest broadliner in ID's Top 50, at $190 million in calendar '01 sales; nevertheless, it is "basically a big version of a mom-and-pop operation, and in the global economy, it was very difficult for it to compete effectively," commented Clifford Cohen, an attorney for Lady Baltimore.

The deal is expected to close in the next two months.
