For Nick Filion, store development and operations manager at the Mad Radish restaurant chain, there’s no room for error when it comes to food safety and operational execution.

The six-unit chain, with a chef-driven menu of salads, sandwiches and burritos, uses tools from MeazureUp to manage store-level compliance with daily checklists, conduct audits and ensure that all food products are labeled correctly.

“It’s a complete system,” said Filion. “At the end of the day, we are a food business, so we need those food labels, and we need those temperature checks.”

“[The prior system] had a lot of features, but you didn’t use most of them, and 99% of the time, the one you wanted just wasn’t there,” he said.

Managers also appreciate DailyChex because they have the ability to see when checklists were completed or missed and take appropriate action.

“It’s the law to make those checklists happen for health and safety regulations, so it is non-negotiable in the restaurant that they need to be done,” Filion said.

The ability to use Bluetooth-connected thermometers to conduct and record temperature readings is also a big plus, eliminating the need for paper records, he added.

In addition to daily checklists, each store can conduct audits on its own using MeazureUp’s AuditApp, and they can also see their performance on corporate audits, allowing them to progress and improve over time, Filion explained. When Mad Radish inspects individual stores, AuditApp allows district managers to include photos and detailed comments in their assessments, helping understand exactly where they need to focus their attention when conducting future assessments.

“It’s a tool to help them meet standards of operations,” he said. “It has made a big difference, and it’s going to continue to make a difference as we go into franchising and we start auditing not just our corporate stores, but franchisees.”
