Closing of food supplier has eateries scrambling

DUBUQUE, Iowa (February 10, 2010)—The closing of a Dubuque food distributor has restaurants in the area scrambling to find a new supplier of meats and other necessities.

Coralville-based Hawkeye Food Service recently purchased Vallet Food Service and closed it down last week. Hawkeye did not return a phone call seeking comment

Dubuque Mining Co. owner Cindy Oliver says she and other restaurant owners are now trying to determine where they are going to go to get their needs met. Oliver says she prefer to rely on local suppliers for hamburger, steaks and chops.

Jim Sweeney, of Sweeney's Supper Club says he purchased numerous items from Vallet. He says he hasn't decided how he will proceed with his future meat buys. For the time being, he says he will rely on a national food distributor that operates in Dubuque.
