The week in ideas, January 7, 2013

It’s a new year, and the Week In Ideas is full of new menu items.

Idea #1: Go spicy. Subway is testing a new Creamy Sriracha Sauce at units in Santa Ana, California.

Idea #2: Cool Ranch arrives. Looks like California is having all the fun these days. After months of reports, there is finally photographic evidence that Taco Bell is testing a Cool Ranch version of its wildly popular Dorito’s Locos in, you guessed it, California.

Idea #3: Charging more for value. Wendy’s is revamping its value meal, and taking some prices above the sacred 99-cent ceiling. The "Right Price Right Size” menu includes items ranging from 99 cents to $1.99. The Junior Cheeseburger Deluxe now costs $1.19, up from 99 cents. You only get four chicken nuggets for 99 cents now, instead of five. And the plain Junior Cheeseburger is back after a hiatus, for 99 cents.

Idea #4: A healthy halo in the shape of a donut. Dunkin continues to blur the line between healthy and not with new Dark Hot Chocolate, French Toast Bagel and Reduced Fat Cinnamon Cream Cheese Spread.

Idea #5: New is not always new. Chicken nuggets! Brilliant! Ok, so maybe that’s overstating it, but Burger King is betting its new chicken nuggets fried in a tempura batter will be a winner.
