Caribou Coffee names Scott Kennedy CEO

A former Target executive, Kennedy had been interim CEO of the Minneapolis-based coffee chain since March.

The Minneapolis-based coffee chain introduced three Milk Bar-branded cookies to the permanent menu, surpassing estimated sales by 30% in less than a week.

CFO Scott Kennedy is named interim CEO for the coffeehouse chain, though Butcher remains an advisor through May. It's the latest in a series of changes at parent company Panera Brands.

The Bottom Line: JAB Holdings gobbled up several mostly breakfast and coffee chains from 2012 through 2017. A few of its acquisitions have performed well, but others have stagnated, including the biggest.

The Bottom Line: The bakery/café chain is reportedly planning to sell Caribou and Einstein Bros. restaurant concepts three years after forming Panera Brands.

The global coffee maker is buying the coffee chain’s roasting operations and will start supplying coffee for the 800-unit chain.

Krispy Kreme CEO Mike Tattersfield, who is stepping down from that position in January, will become the company’s board chairman. Former Starbucks CFO Patrick Grismer will become lead independent director.

Taste Tracker: Cool drinks debut at Applebee’s, Sonic and Caribou Coffee; Velvet Taco and Baja Fresh change up tacos; KFC tests nuggets; it’s a wrap for Arby’s; and more menu news of the week.

Giants like Starbucks and Domino’s are building more drive-thrus while regional drive-thru chains have exploded. And consumers are flocking to them.
