Wendy’s expands its veggie-burger test

wendys black bean burger

Wendy’s announced that it is adding two new test markets for a black-bean burger it had been quietly testing in some Columbus, Ohio, units since last year.

Wendy’s will now serve the vegetarian burger—which contains black beans, grains and a smattering of vegetables, and is topped with pepper jack cheese and Parmesan ranch sauce—at locations in Salt Lake City and Columbia, S.C.

The black-bean burger can also be ordered vegan, the chain noted on its website, as the patty and bun contain vegan-friendly ingredients and are prepared separately from meat in the back of the house.

Wendy’s joins a list of QSRs seeking to boost their appeal with customers looking for alternative proteins, including Taco Bell, which recently rolled out a certified vegetarian menu.
