U.S. pizza chains hit a post-pandemic wall

The Bottom Line: Growth that came so easy to pizza delivery chains like Domino’s, Pizza Hut and Papa Johns is now much harder to come by. And now two of them are looking for new leadership.

Leadership

David Graves is out as president of Pizza Hut U.S.

Aaron Powell, the pizza chain’s global CEO, will take over management of the restaurant brand domestically while a replacement is found.

The chain partnered with Yeastie Boys food trucks to launch the Big New Yorker Pizza Bagel.

Nearly 25% of the global locations for the company’s brands KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and Habit have been built over the past three years.

The chain’s latest research and trends are guiding the culinary team toward the flavors and pizza styles most in demand.

Park will replace Clay Johnson, who will remain with the owner of KFC and Taco Bell as a senior advisor.

The Bottom Line: Two California Pizza Hut operators are getting rid of their own delivery services in advance of the state’s fast-food minimum wage. The potential implications of that move are enormous.

Marketing Bites: Pizza Hut says thank you to delivery drivers, Wingstop launches a card game and Shoney’s celebrates National Free Hot Fudge Cake Day.

The Bottom Line: The CEOs of the franchise giants decried the NLRB’s joint employer ruling but said that their brands have the strength to overcome them, anyway.

The $7 Deal Lovers Menu largely matches rivals Domino’s and Papa Johns and comes as more brands push value offers.
