SAVRpak, the maker of a peel-and-stick patch designed to keep takeout food fresh, will now be available to hundreds of thousands of restaurants through a partnership with Sysco.
The giant supplier said Tuesday that it will start offering SAVRpak under its Cutting Edge Solutions platform for innovative products.
The San Juan Capistrano, Calif.-based company aims to solve the problem of soggy to-go food as takeout and delivery continue to roll.
"This new technology will support our customers’ success by ensuring that meals provided through takeout, delivery or curbside travel well and taste the same as dine-in," said Judy Sansone, Sysco's executive vice president and chief commercial officer, in a statement.
Originally developed by aerospace engineer Bill Birgen for his own lunches, SAVRpak patches are made of paper and plant-based pulp. Restaurants can apply a patch to the inside of a clamshell, pizza box, paper bag, or other packaging, where it absorbs moisture and keeps it away from the food. The patch can reduce humidity by as much as 45%, SAVRpak said.
In May, the company raised $3.5 million in a funding round led by investor and entrepreneur Mark Cuban. It called the partnership with Sysco "a gamechanger."
