Amato’s Pizza was founded in 1902 by immigrant Giovanni Amato who got his start selling fresh sandwiches to fellow dockworkers. After more than a century, the most popular sandwich on the menu is still “Amato’s Original,” made with ham, cheese and veggies, but the menu now includes wraps, focaccia and hot sandwiches, pasta dishes and the eponymous pizza with over 20 different toppings. The chain has expanded beyond its Maine base into New Hampshire, Vermont and upstate New York.
