Maggiano's begins a turnaround, with Chili's playbook in hand

The Italian casual-dining chain is taking cues from its soaring sister concept as it looks to return to traffic growth.

Updates such as tableside drink service and specially grown tomatoes are designed to give customers more bang for their buck at the polished-casual Italian chain.

Former MGM Resorts exec Dominique Bertolone has been tapped to lead the next wave of growth for Brinker International's Italian casual-dining brand.

The longtime Brinker executive, industry veteran and onetime presidential speechwriter will step down at the end of August.

Off-premise sales are up 81% compared to before pandemic, and they are highly incremental, executives said.

Maggiano's Italian Classics features Italian standards, with an emphasis on $10 lunch combos.

Comps for both brands were helped by the It's Just Wings virtual concept, but off-premise business slipped overall.

Same-store sales have slipped during the period from -1% to -12.3% and parent Brinker International is pulling back quarterly guidance.

It's Just Wings will provide its signature product from the kitchens of Chili's and Maggiano's.
