Papa John’s is integrating marketing, operations and technology

The pizza chain has promoted Max Wetzel to an expanded role as chief commercial officer, where he will oversee North America operations as well as marketing.

The pizza chain, eager to add more locations after years of decline, has an agreement with Sun Holdings to develop 100 locations by 2029.

The company wants to bring in more large-scale operators. But it is also encouraging existing franchisees to open more locations.

The pizza chain kept strong sales despite intense competition and an easing quarantine behind its Epic Stuffed Crust Pizza, helping push the chain’s growth even further.

The pizza chain’s same-store sales rose last quarter despite tough comparisons. It opened a record 123 net new locations in the first half of the year.

The pizza chain is giving out hiring, referral and “appreciation” bonuses to new and existing frontline workers at company locations and in the supply chain.

Papa Rewards has 20 million members. The program has helped the chain generate strong sales through the pandemic.

Chef Scott Rodriguez and his team transformed pizza dough into a handheld Italian street food, and the chain now has a thriving sandwich business.

The company has a 250-unit deal with PJ Western Group to expand into the country over the next seven years.
