Krispy Kreme doubles down, literally, on vaccines

The doughnut chain said it would give vaccinated customers two free doughnuts any time next week.

Krispy Kreme is sweetening its offer to vaccinated customers.  

The newly public, Charlotte-based doughnut chain on Wednesday said it would give two free doughnuts next week to anybody who has had at least one vaccination shot.

The two-doughnut offer is an upgrade to an offer last spring in which the company started giving out a free doughnut to anybody who received a vaccine shot any time for the rest of the year.

Company executives said earlier this month that the free-doughnut offer helped generate strong sales last quarter. Krispy Kreme said it has already given away 2.5 million doughnuts.

That offer is continuing. But between Aug. 30 and Sept. 5 Krispy Kreme will add a second, original glazed heart doughnut, to the original glazed doughnut customers can already receive.

Krispy Kreme said the “Show Your Heart” offer is to celebrate this week’s approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine.

To get the doughnuts, customers simply need to show their vaccination cards. “We all hoped we’d be near the end of this pandemic by now. We’re not,” Dave Skena, Krispy Kreme’s chief marketing officer, said in a statement. “So please consider getting vaccinated if you’ve not done so already. And then enjoy and share two amazing doughnuts with our heart-felt thanks.”

The heart-shaped doughnuts will also be available for purchase throughout the week. And the single free doughnut offer will remain in place through the end of 2021.
